Police in New Zealand are racing to trace pineapple-flavoured sweets containing "potentially lethal levels of methamphetamine" after they were distributed by a charity in Auckland.
The Auckland City Mission charity, which donates parcels of essentials to locals who cannot afford food, first became aware of the issue on Tuesday afternoon, after several recipients complained about the foul-tasting candies
.
Though none are in the hospital as of this report, the sweets in question resulted in at least three people, including a child, seeking medical attention. The boiled candies were reportedly donated to the charity anonymously and were sealed.
“It is vital they are taken out of circulation as soon as possible,” Auckland Police Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin said during a Wednesday press conference.
